The Truth Behind a History
Elsa, Yumika and Nicolas
Have you ever found out that history is not what your textbook says?
Have you ever found out that there is always something else to the “history” you are told?
Have you ever doubted that?
Sometimes you may find two documents talking about the same history, but with completely opposite perspectives.
What is the truth then? Who should you believe? Why is it different?
To what extent will history affect people’s opinions about the world now?
You are the detective now. Come and find the truth.

Made in Hong Kong
Jason
Make a reflection about the protests at the beginning of the year.
Consider three main different approaches people take when they feel unhappy, how can they be used and in which contexts.
There will be a small simulation part when the participants will be divided into three groups and come up with three different ways of solving a problem. This will be followed by a discussion about these three different ways, how can they co-exist and if there are any other approaches.
Warning: trigger for loud sounds of violent protest and war.
From Nationalism to Immigration
Boris
Some argue that, in today’s globalized world, migration is causing an erosion of borders and sovereignty.
Some others thank this global phenomenon migration for connecting different societies and powering growth.
Who is right and who is wrong, if anyone at all?
Maps and Stories
Kat and Fred
If we think of perfectionism as the basis for any utopia, the idea becomes more attainable. However, reaching a consensus on what “perfect” means is a difficult task in itself.
Don’t believe me? Try drawing it.
You don’t need any artistic skills to join this workshop, just an open mind!
Challenging Fake Harmony
Chiel
In all communities, including our own, there are forms of social injustice that are not really talked about or implicitly suppressed, leading to what can be called ‘fake harmony’. In order to get closer to Utopia, we need to challenge the parts of ourselves and our communities that perpetuate social injustice. Let’s take a look at our own UWC community and identify elements of social injustice. Using conflict models we will analyze those topics and look for constructive ways forward.
Warning: The workshop is going to look at our community and social injustice faced by community members, topics can be very personal and emotional.
Protests & Actions on Campus - was this the right approach?
Kate and Mada
A discussion about the actions that some DP students took on campus in October 2020.
Did these actions contribute towards our mission of peace or did they contradict this?
Syria: A Different Scope of Reality
Jad, Enas, Firas, Mohammed
The workshop is an interactive simulation of a story of a young girl who lived through the war in Syria. The story starts from Baba Amr, a neighborhood in Homs and the participants will live the story of how the revolution started in Syria, how it affected the young girl’s life and how were the outcomes of a year under the siege of the Syrian army. This stimulation has different stages, each stage has certain consequences on her life, in the end, the participants will be given a choice, which will change her life forever. The simulation will be followed by 3 different discussions that explain each of the stages, sharing personal stories that we or our families experienced and giving the participant an insight about our experiences.
Warning: sensitive content, visual and auditory effects are going to be used, which might be triggering for some people.
Talking In A World That Wants You Silenced
Chiara and Laure
In, supposedly, the “freest democracy in the world”... how is it still possible that certain demographics are disenfranchised? How is it possible that certain demographics are discriminated against?
Are they purposefully silenced?
Why?
How?
When Dystopias Meet Reality
Constanza
This century has been a golden age for dystopian fiction. A repressive regime, censorship and state violence can only exist in literature, right?
Then, how come this sounds so familiar for 28,887,118 people?
Open your eyes. Dare to explore. Welcome to the jewel of Latin America.
Warning: this workshop contains sensitive content, including triggering audio.
You Gaze While Eyes Shut
Leslie
Riding your white elephant
upon the hills,
you pay the tickets of entrance
to their home.
You wish to prolong this moment of epiphany by photographs,
so that you can count the rings on their necks,
calculating their ages.
You wish to exchange your splendid white elephant
with their hand-made wooden catapults,
out of charity.
“What a wonderful world!”
You acclaim, amazed and amused.
Your eyes are wide open,
or are they?
