Speakers and Experts 2019
Zineb El Rhazoui
Zineb El Rhazoui was born in Casablanca, Morocco. Growing up in Morocco, she routinely asked critical questions about the subordinate status of women under Islam. She is quoted as saying "As a woman in a male-dominated country, you sooner or later face a choice. You can comply, let yourself be cowed, and shut up, or you have to fight."
After graduating, while working at Cairo University as a teaching assistant, she read early Islamic writings which she found to be more open and critical than contemporary writings.
Since the beginning of her journalism career she has written of the downfalls she sees in the Moroccan government. She has founded many organizations, such as MALI which is a pro democracy and pro secularism movement in Morocco. She lived her life in Morocco in explicit defiance of the rule of the regime there, which led to her exile in Slovenia. She later moved to France where she became the spokesperson for Ni Putes Ni Soumises. She went on to write articles for Charlie Hebdo, and during the massacre she was at home in Casablanca. In the aftermath of the attack she has lived her life with constant security surveillance, but the increased danger has not stopped her from spreading her message. She writes frequently about her belief in secularism, her disagreement with western attitudes towards Islam, her own feelings on Islam and the concept of anti-Muslim racism.
