CHALLENGING POWER
EXAMINING POWER DYNAMICS AND REALIZING OUR POTENTIAL IN ACHIEVING PEACE
The International Peace Conference 2016 took us on a journey through the intricacies of peace and politics. As we explored various conflicts around the world, we emerged with heightened awareness about the dynamics at play. With insightful speakers talking through peace theories, and workshops exploring domestic and international conflicts, the organising team realised that there was consistently a sort of power dynamics at play - be it the unequal relationships between countries, the large power structures that govern the international running’s of today’s world or the inherent power of grassroots movement and individual action. There was one theme across the conference that needed to be explored:
That of power.
And with that, IPC 2017 emerged from Peace and Politics. Driven by both the urgent drive to act as well as the need to critically analyse the current state of affairs, this conference’s theme is Challenging Power. Through the student led workshops, international level speakers, interactive sessions and panel discussions the participants will examine power dynamics and realise their potential in achieving peace. IPC 2017 will be grounded in exploring the wider power structures and relationships at play as well as delving into the power that grassroots movements hold.
With IPC, we aim to bring participants to a convergence point of sorts. Perhaps the current cycles of conflict on every scale are being perpetuated because of our lack of consciousness and subsequent inaction. It will only be when awareness meets self-realisation, will there be any possibility of action.
